At this time of year in South Florida, our local news media begins the onslaught of storm predictions for hurricane season and what you should do now to prepare. You have probably heard more on this subject than you really wanted to hear. But we have some preparation ideas and information that the news media doesn't usually impart.
Review Your Policy Coverage Now
Once a storm has formed and is heading our way, most insurance companies do not allow an agent to bind new coverage or increase coverage on an existing policy. We suggest you take a few moments now to make sure you have the appropriate coverage. If you have any questions, please call our office and any of our experienced agents can review your policy with you.
Who Do I Call If I Need To Make A Claim?
Whether your home is damaged by a hurricane, fire or some other disaster, you will need specific information to file a claim. Have the insurance company name, phone number and your policy number handy; these items will assist in getting your claim filed quickly should you experience a loss. You could type the information in your cell phone under Notes or take a picture of the policy declaration page with your smart phone camera. There are also free apps you could use, such as CamScanner. This one turns your phone into a document scanner using the camera on your smartphone. The Fulton Agency website has a list of all the companies we represent and their claim phone numbers.
What Information Will I Need?
In addition to your policy number, it will help if you are prepared with detailed information. One way we suggest preparing yourself is creating a home inventory. This will assist you in remembering all the items you have in your home so that you can get reimbursement for any that are damaged or lost in a disaster. Photos or videos of each room are an effective way to start. Of course, having a detailed description, receipts, and serial numbers (if applicable) will help tremendously in making sure you don't forget any items and have proof to back up your claim. While this may seem like an overwhelming task, there are home inventory programs you can use to make the task easier. Take a look at Know Your Stuff. It is a free online inventory offered by the Insurance Information Institute and they have a free app for iPhone and Android users in addition to their website. The State of Florida also has a financial preparedness toolkit.
