When comparing insurance policies it's important to make sure you are comparing apples to apples. In insurance the apples are called "coverages."
One company may cost less than another, but you may not be getting a good deal if the coverage is less. To help you to understand how to read a policy or a quotation for a policy, we have broken down the major types of insurance policies by the coverages they contain. You will be able to read a simple explanation of each coverage you are likely to find on an auto, home, business and contractors policy. There is also a description of the various types of life insurance policies commonly available.
How To Read Your Policy
Today almost all insurance is written in "plain language" unlike the policies of old that started "the party of the first part, Section I notwithstanding," etc. It's in plain English.
You may have heard the first thing they teach lawyers in law school - it's how to read. Begin reading the policy from the beginning. If you don't understand a word, look for a section called "definitions." There you will find a list of the important words and terms explained. And don't hesitate to look in a dictionary for further help if you encounter an unfamiliar word.
There is no substitute for reading your policy. It's the best way to learn about insurance.
